Hi Everybuddy!

My name is Kharma Kitty and I am the newest member of the house in O Hi O! The 'rents were not going to add any more kitties to the pack, but there was just something about me that made me hard to resist. I am told that I resemble a very important kitty who came before. My Gotcha' day is July 20th. I was brought in to the Humane Society of Allen County as a stray (that means I was dumped there...). Anyway, Mommy kept her eye on me and after I was there for 3 months and no one had wanted to adopt me, she asked Daddy if we could find room in their hearts for one more. Here is the video Mommy sent so Daddy could see how awesome I am...

I am about a year and a half old and I get along with everyone. It took less than a day for everyone to get use to me. My best buddies are Ricky-Tiki-Tavi and the woofie Fletcher! We like to wrestle. The older kitties think I am OK, but they are not much into playing. I love to play! THOE and wrestling are my favorites!

I know who I look like. The 'rents said that it was karma that brought me to them and maybe a little angel kitty by the name of Perfectly Parker. I'm pretty sure they are right. Thanks Parker - I'll do my best to live up to your awesomeness!

We realize that not everyone can adopt a new cat, but most folks really do want to make a difference. The good news is there are many ways to help. From assisting in the care and placement of shelter felines to educating the public on feral cat issues—here are a few easy ways you can make a difference for homeless cats in your community.

Show Your Virtual Support
Dedicate your MySpace page, Facebook status, Tweet or blog to an adoptable cat and help spread the word about Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month! You can also join our cause on Facebook or put an ASPCA donation widget on your personal web page.

Volunteer at Your Local Shelter. Volunteering at your local shelter is a great way to make a difference in the lives of homeless cats. From playing with kittens and organizing fundraising events to fostering abused or frightened felines, shelters across the country are in desperate need of volunteers. Be sure to visit our Ten Ways to Help Your Local Shelter for more suggestions.

Donate Goods. Caring for homeless cats and providing them with food are expensive endeavors. You can help by donating money or goods—including toys, crates, blankets or food to your local shelter. Always check to see what the shelter needs before donating.

Throw a Party! Organize an event for all your friends, and donate the proceeds to your favorite shelter in honor of Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month. Any kind of social event—a pizza party, car wash or community yard sale—is a great way to make new friends and raise money. Publicize it with flyers and signs, and remind everyone about the importance of Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month.

Spread the Word! Talk to others about helping homeless pets. Encourage those who are looking for new pets to consider adopting an animal from a shelter. Inform friends and family members about shelter fundraisers and events.

Care for Feral Cats. The number of feral cats in the U.S. is estimated to be in the tens of millions. Our Feral Cat FAQ will teach you how to help protect and humanely control the feral cats in your neighborhood.

Help Stray Kittens. Warm weather brings outdoor fun—and kittens! Sounds cute, but during kitten season—which runs from early spring until late fall—neighborhoods and shelters across the country can become overwhelmed. Learn how you can help.

Promote Spaying and Neutering. Millions of adoptable cats are put to sleep in shelters every year due to pet overpopulation. Help develop a spay/neuter outreach program in your community. Visit our Spay/Neuter Database to see who in your community offers low-cost spay/neuter programs. Create flyers promoting these organizations and pass them out at shopping centers, pet supply stores and schools.

Contact the Media. Write a letter to the editor of your local or regional newspaper, reminding them that June is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month. Be sure to include a heads-up about any adoption or fundraising events happening at your local shelter. You can also contact TV and radio stations!

Report Animal Cruelty. One of the best things you can do to for the cats in your community is to help crack down on animal cruelty. Visit our Fight Animal Cruelty section for simple actions you can take to make the world a safer place for cats and other animal companions.



T.C. The Cat - Lookin' For Love and A Forever Home

This is T.C.

He's a lover -  that's for sure. He had a face rash and it is clearing up significantly since the vet medicated him. He is living in a horse barn with one of Mommy's friends. Just showed up one day.

He's currently getting treatment on his right eye with Neomyocin Eye Ointment because he looked like it was irritated. So that's getting better day by day...I hope someone will want him. He was tested for Feline Leukemia on July 5 - negative. Given all vaccinations and neutered! He's ready to go to someone who would love to have a cat rub on their legs and  feet! He's gaining weight and lounging on the hay. He can't stay where he is because the indoor kitties will not accept him - they are two calico gals who have their minds made up!

T.C. is very friendly and we can arrange transportation. He lives in the Lima O Hi O area. Even though he currently lives in a barn, he'd like a real home to call his very own. If anyone is interested in this young male kitty, please contact us at hmiller013ATwohDOTrrDOTcom

A Forever Home For The Holidays

I'm asking everyone to open their heart and/or home to a homeless pet this holiday season. Visit Iamshome4theholidays.com for a myriad of ideas and ways to help orphaned pets.The goal is to raise awareness of this campaign and encourage those who are considering getting a pet around the Holiday season to choose one from a shelter rather than a pet store--and save a kitty life (or other-shelter-animal life) in the process. I salute Iams for this support of shelters.

This being said I need to ask Iam's a huge favor. Please stop animal testing in your Dayton Ohio laboratory. Iams has made progress, but as an industry leader, it must send an even clearer message: No animal deserves the fate of those who remain in their laboratories. Safe, healthy cat and dog food does not require harming cats and dogs.

This is probably not going to make me popular with the very nice lady that asked me to do a post about the Home For The Holidays campaign and I am sorry for that. But I have to be true to my beliefs about how manufacturers produce their food.

If you can find it in your heart and have room in your home, please consider making one little kitty or doggie a part of it. Thanks.

Formerly Feral Friday - Home

Some of you kitties had questions about the big party/social function/gathering that will be going on a week from Saturday here in my little corner of O Hi O. So I thought I'd tell you a little bit about what's going to happen that day. All of us kitties will be "confined" to one bedroom upstairs with our beds, our Gizzies, our food and water and our, um, bathroom facilities. Mommy is worried that we would be too overwhelmed by all of the people and commotion. She does not want us to be overly upset. This is the same thing that happened to us when we moved here last August. Hopefully we will just nap a lot. She'll check in on us to be sure we are OK. Diamond Doggy gets to hang out in the garage (it's attached and he'll get to meet some of the guests, he's just social that way!)

Here I am practicing my "how could you do this to me, see how pathetic I am" look. I think I have it perfected. This is the hallway upstairs. Our confinement bedroom is behind my boohiney. It has a view of the front yard so I can see all of the people coming and going. I can also watch to make certain those vishus deer don't climb up on the roof to eat me! Mommy says that those deer on the porch are not vishus and that they have to stay. They have been with her longer than we have and they have never attacked one single kitty. I think that there is always a first time so I will be vigilant!
Here's "Daddy the Worker Bee." He hates working with the holiday lights yet he is like the energizer bunny...he keeps going and going and going. I will have Mommy show you some more photos of the decorations when they are all finished. Our big tree goes up tomorrow. The kitty tree is already up in the living room. It's very nice and we have been sleeping under it. The big tree is a real live tree! I am looking forward to that! There is also a lot of cooking and baking in our future. Mommy is making her famous fudgies for every guest bean to to take home after the party. And Daddy is making sugar cookies. The rest of the food is coming from a caterer. Mommy says that she loves to cook, but couldn't handle cooking for that many beans at once. I know that beef is involved so I am hoping that we get to eat some of it too! Sometimes I look around and think how lucky I am. I will always remember what feral felt like. I know I am loved and safe now. It is a good feeling. We are working on a big donation box for the local Humane Society. I'm also asking Santa to find homes for kitties - everykitty should have one!

A New Addition To Our Family!

Wayside - Fur Ball - Wow!

Mommy has to catch an early flight and leave again for O Hi O, sigh... she wanted me to tell you that she will do a full report on the Fur Ball. According to Mommy it was WONDERFUL and a sqillion dollars was raised for all the Waifs at the shelter. She said she will work on the report tonight. She said that the kindness of people makes her eyes leak and that all of us kitties who have forever homes should give a smooch to our Mommies and/or Daddies. We are the fortunate ones. Much love from me and my family from the middle of the U.S of A.

O Hi O Birds Must Be Very Hungry!

Mommy decided she would make her apartment feel a little more lived in, so she spruced up the balcony and invited some birds over to visit. She saw some kitty wind chimes and had to have them. It's hard to tell from the photo, but there are four kitties on the chimes, one for each of us at home! Mommy says that they sound very relaxing and they help reduce her stress. Of course they would! They have kitties on them! The bird feeder was full yesterday - look how much those birdies are eating! Mommy said she has spotted all different types of birdies coming to visit. I wish I was there to say hello to the birdies. I'd give them a greeting that they would never forget! Hee-Hee!

Little Cute O Hi O Shelter Kitty No-Name Yet

In other O Hi O news, Mommy went to the shelter yesterday and cuddled Bob, who IS STILL THERE! Then she met this little sweetheart who wanted some lovin', he was so new that he didn't have a name yet! I think they should name him George! Ha!

I Have A New Buddy and His Name is Buddy

Isn't Buddy a handsome cat? I fell for his eyes if you want to know the truth. I think we may be kitty soul mates! Buddy is one of the many cats who reside at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. I have been begging Mommy and Daddy to sponsor a kitty there and today they finally said yes. So I looked through all of the very deserving kitties up for adoption and sponsorship and then...I saw those eyes! I read about Buddy and I knew he was the cat for me to sponsor. Here's his story:

"Buddy is a big cuddly polar bear! You would never guess, seeing him now, that he used to be a big-time stuntman in Los Angeles. But it's true - at least we think it is. Unfortunately, his last stunt didn't go so well. When he was found in Hollywood, he had a broken hip, a broken jaw, a broken tail, and a detached retina. Ouch! As a result, he now has trouble making it to the litter box. But you've never seen a guy so happy in retirement. Buddy is so easy-going, he sits in the tub and purrs during his twice-weekly baths."

Sounds like Buddy had a pretty rough life before he made it to Best Friends. I like making new friends and maybe I can send him some treats and goodies!

I have a favor to ask you kitties who know how to do fancy stuff on your blog - how do I link Buddy's name in my sidebar to his page at Best Friends? I went to the help center, but Mommy is too dumb to figure out if the answer is even there! All I want to do is to be able to click on his name and go to his page! I know how to do it in a post, but there is no linky thing when you add photos and captions to your sidebar. Any help sure would be appreciated!

Guess Who Mommy Went to Visit? Bob!

Mommy got to leave her job early on Friday, so she decided to go and love on Bob! He was happy to see her and he chirped and purred and just generally showed off his handsome orange self while Mommy snapped a few photos. Bob decided to give himself a bath and demonstrate some kitty yoga moves and then he got up in her lap for some serious lovin' time. It made Mommy feel better, since she is missin' us so very much. I am over being jealous of Bob 'cause I know Mommy is ours forever and Bob just gets her for visitation. Bob would like everyone to know that he is ready, willing and able to make someone's house a real home. He's ready to pack his kitty bags and go! If you live near Allen County O Hi O, come and get him! Bob's 'da bomb!

Look Who Mommy Met Today! Bob! A Cat!

"Hi, I'm Bob, Wanna' Little Smoochy?"

As predicted, Mommy couldn't not go to the shelter in O Hi O (yeah, I know, bad grammar, but that's how I talk!). She spent the afternoon getting to know the kitties there. She can't volunteer 'till she goes through an oryintashun, but they let her meet and cuddle some fabulous felines. I just don't know how to feel about this. Daddy said that I should be happy that Mommy gave some homeless kitties a little lovin', but that's just what I don't like! The lovin' should all be for me! She's my Mommy! Mommy told Daddy that the shelter In O Hi O is way smaller than Wayside Waifs, but it was very clean and the people seemed to be taking good care of the cats. Mommy said hello to all of the feline residents, but there was one that she really got a "kitty-jones" for. That would be Bob. He's orange and has been there since 2005! The following is the shelter's description of Bob:
"Bob is a 2 1/2 old orange tiger. Bob came to our shelter with a tail injury and had to have it surgically removed. With a little time and TLC he is doing well. Bob would love to go to a new home with his best friend Cash. healing. Bob is as good as new."
Bob looks like a rumpy manx. But apparently he started life out with a tail. No one at the shelter knew if he ever had a home before. Bob was snoozing in a wicker basket when Mommy met him. She said he woke up, squinted at her and chirped "hello!" He then stood up, stretched and sauntered over to where Mommy was sitting and hopped right into her lap (her lap...sigh...). Bob has a wicked loud purr and he's a gentleman with his claws. Mommy melted and spent a long time lovin' on Bob. So everykitty, here's hoping that Bob gets a forever home very soon and that Mommy can resist his handsome and suave ways.

Going Orange For A Day

Uh oh! I'm a day late! Go Orange for animals! Here's my favorite orange guy - my brother Rudy who wants all of us to support the ASPCA. Get busy everykitty and spread the good word about adopting from a shelter! Purrs from our animal family to yours - Perfectly Parker!

Fur Ball - But, Notice Something Familiar?

For the last three years Mommy has had the honor of volunteering at the charitable event of the year in Kansas City. It is the infamous Fur Ball where all of Kansas City's nicest, most generous patrons come out and have a wonderful, fun-filled evening while generating almost a quarter of Wayside Waifs operating budget every year. I kid you not kitties, this is the place to be in Kansas City on May 19th! There isn't a better planned, full of fun and surprises, great food and drink party in K.C. And lemme' tell ya', the money generated goes directly toward caring for the animals seeking sanctuary at Wayside. It is SO MUCH FUN!

Mommy isn't a guest at the Fur Ball, she works her human tail off all night. She helps to register the guests, she assists in the silent auctions and she is one of the "runners" during the real-time auction where guests bid thousands of dollars for fabulous trips, adventures, exotic dining and other luxury items that very generous folks donate for Wayside's benefit.

Fur Ball 2007 will put Tinsel Town to shame!

Whether you choose to go uptown in tux and gown, dress as your favorite star, or wear what you wear when you walk your pet (yes…casual is fine!)…come ready to strut your stuff down the red carpet and let the fur fly well into the night. Fabulous food, cocktails a-plenty, and lots of entertainment and surprises will make your evening “An Affair to Remember”! And nobody leaves the A-Cat-emy Awards without winning big particularly when the bidding starts during our “Best of Show” live and silent auctions.

Mobile Adoptions, Hot Cars and Cool Cats!

don't you LOVE that graphic? Mommy loves going on mobile adoptions with the Wayside animals. It's amazing how successful mobile adoption events are. K.C.'s big home show was last weekend and 129 amimals were adopted between Thursday evening and Sunday night. It was a record for Wayside Waifs!

This is the event that Mommy worked on Sunday before our party

April 1, 2007,Noon to 4pm -Rain date: April 15th
On April 1st, Wayside Waifs will host the first annual Hot Cars for Cool Cats. This car show will raise money for the thousands of homeless animals that pass through our doors. If you are interested in participating, download our entry form.
In addition to all those hot cars we will have some cool cats and hot prices. On event day, every cat adoption will be only $50.

Like this little dreamboat, Beatrix - Mommy packed Beatrix's bags just as the show was closing. She went to a great home. Mommy's eyes leaked - but in a good way!

Waifs

Mommy has decided that she is going to introduce a long time kitty from Wayside Waifs every once in a while. Who knows, someone close to us might see the kitty and give him/her a forever home! So - here's the first kitty - Elise!
Elise is a great cat! Her description on Petfinder is as follows; (Mommy wrote it!)
"Elise is a lovely 4 year old gal who was surrendered with her sister LuLu when their people found out they were expecting a child. She is a very sedate, loving cat who thinks that heaven consists of laps and warm spots to nap. She LOVES laser light playtime and she has a very unique purr. All in all this kitty is a doll and deserves a forever home. She does fine with other kitties and she'd LOVE to be adopted with LuLu, but would be willing to go to a home with other kitties as well. Come and meet this adorable gal. She'd love to show you her lap sitting skills and that special purr!"
Her sister Lulu has already been adopted. Elise has been a patient kitty and has been lookin' for love in all the right places. The right people just haven't appeared yet. By the way - I think people who have the notion that babies and kitties can't live together need to sign an agreement that they can never, ever, have a pet in their home again. Elise is 'da bomb and would have been a perfect babysitter! So anyway, that's my pal Elise!
Mommy said it was a very good day at Wayside, when she left at 4:00, seven kitties had already packed their kitty bags and headed on out the door. Seven kitties in four hours is a very, very good day!
Mommy hopes that tomorrow is just as wonderful!
Are you guys having a good weekend? Mommy and Daddy are going to have a few glasses of something they call happy juice and celebrate a very good day! (p.s. - I heard them talkin', and I think they are gonna' shut us out of the bedroom! - why would they do such a thing ?????)

How My Mommy Will Spend Her Weekend

This ginormous facility is Wayside Waifs. It is the largest Humane Society in Kansas City. They've been around since 1944! I am proud to say that my Mommy spends a lot of her "free" time volunteering for this organization. Mommy volunteers as an "adoption counselor," which means she has the job of finding forever homes for the kitties (and doggies - but mostly kitties) who live there.
Here's a short history of this building;
In March 1999, Wayside Waifs opened the doors of its new state-of-the-art facility. The 32,700 square foot building can shelter up to 800 animals. In 2006, nearly 15,000 pets were taken in at Wayside Waifs. In addition, Wayside offers many other services to the community including humane education for children and adults, an anti-violence humane education program for grades 3 - 5, a volunteer program, a seniors’ program, shelter for the pets of women in domestic violence shelters, a behavior helpline for frustrated pet owners, and more.
Pretty overwhelming, eh? On any given day, there are over 300 kitties, doggies, bunnies, birds and reptiles looking for forever homes. That doesn't mean that there are "only" 300 animals in the facility. There are an additional 400+ animals who are being evaluated, held for various reasons and boarded for domestic violence. It is a very large shelter, but it is a very caring and humane shelter too! Mommy says that it is a place you can go and see the very best in humans come out and the very worst. The people who work and volunteer there give all they have to the wonderful animals who have found themselves homeless.
Mommy always feels bad this time of year because it's starting to be kitten season and the shelter will take in so many kittens that it will fill up all of the spaces in the shelter and it will fill up all of the foster homes (and there are a lot of foster homes)!
I know I'm a smart and lucky kitty - so I won't preach, cause you kitties have humans that take good care of you! But, if you have a few spare bucks, or have a spare bedroom, help your local humane society. This time of year they can use all of the help that they can get!
So... go now and give your humans a head boinky and a few purrs! Let them know you are happy to have love and a forever home. There are way too many of us who don't have that luxury!
