The Story Of Rocky the Baby Raccoon

We had a visitor show up on our porch last Friday morning. We think that the storm took our visitor away from where their home was. Maybe they lived in the big tree that blew down 2 doors down. Daddy named the baby raccoon Rocky. Rocky seemed a little scared and did not know what to do. We do not know what happened to Rocky's Mommy or if Rocky had any siblings. Mommy and Daddy felt very bad for Rocky and called some rescue places. No one knew what to tell them...

After a little while Rocky got brave and would get close to Daddy. As you can see Rocky is very, very cute. You can biggify any of these photos for extra-added cuteness. He also liked to pose for the camera. Daddy wanted to pet Rocky, but knew that petting him would not be a good idea.

After trying many, many types of food, Daddy discovered that Rocky really liked cheese! So while Rocky had breakfast, Daddy came up with a plan...

Daddy put one of our PTU's on the porch and put some cheese in it. Rocky walked right in and settled in for a nice snack. That's when Daddy closed the door to the PTU and took Rocky for a drive in his big truck. Daddy said Rocky seemed to be enjoying the adventure. I don't think I would have enjoyed it very much, but I guess that's the difference between cats and raccoons!
Daddy drove Rocky to a very big park near our home. He walked out into the woods with Rocky and opened the PTU...Rocky came right out and headed right for the nearest tree!
Up he goes! Rocky was a natural at climbing trees! This made Daddy very happy to see!
Rocky seemed very happy in the park with lots of trees and the little stream nearby. After a little while Rocky climbed down from the tree and decided to check out the rest of his new home.
Here is Rocky heading toward the stream. Daddy said that Rocky turned around once as if to say "Thank-you and Bye-Bye!" Daddy said that he felt happy and sad at the same time. I am glad that Rocky has a nice new home and maybe he will find some new raccoon buddies to play with!

  7. What a sweet story! That's so good what your daddy did. When I was little, my aunt had two raccoons. They had been found when they were really, really little, much smaller than Rocky. She took care of them since they were babies. It was pretty neat having them as pets, however, they don't live long in captivity, but because they had been raised by humans, they couldn't be released in the wild. They had a good life, however, with her.

Their names were Bevis and Butthead, that dates it!

  44. Oh how did I miss this story? I'm glad that Rocky went to visit Skeezix or I never would have seen him. He is a cutie. Do baby racoons leave their mommas when they are that small? I feel sad that you didn't get more help. I read about a lady who kept a racoon as a pet. She lived in the woods. She would let him outside to play and one day she found him dead. Some other animal had made him go dead. So your dad did a good thing by not petting him.

Our Gramma (Mom's Mom) had a pet raccoon, Bobby, when she was a little girl. Gramma grew up in the country. Gramma says that raccoons are normally nocturnal, but Bobby changed his schedule to match the people. Gramma says his favorite food was potato salad!
